Colorado Springs water often travels through aging infrastructure and is influenced by regional geology, which can lead to taste, odor, mineral buildup, and variable pressure. For families seeking lasting health, comfort, and appliance longevity, a practical retrofit plan can make a tangible difference. In this post, Legacy Plumbing outlines a family-friendly, actionable approach to benchmarking water quality and upgrading with a whole-house water softener and an under-sink reverse osmosis (RO) system.

Why Colorado Springs Water Calls for a Proactive Retrofit

Residents commonly notice scale on fixtures, mineral rings in kettles, and inconsistent water softness. Hard water can strain appliances, reduce soap efficiency, and leave skin feeling dry. By benchmarking your water and installing targeted filtration, you can improve taste, protect plumbing, and support healthier daily use for your family.

Hard water concerns: Elevated calcium and magnesium levels cause scale buildup in pipes, water heaters, and appliances.
Water taste and odor: Chlorine and natural minerals can affect flavor and scent, especially for drinking water.
Residential comfort: Softer water improves skin, hair, and overall shower experience.
Appliance longevity: Reducing scale extends life and efficiency of heaters, dishwashers, and washing machines.

Benchmarking Your Current Water Quality: A Simple Plan

Start with a practical, at-home benchmarking routine to identify priority improvements. This doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated.

Initial observation: Note taste, smell, and visible scale on faucets and showerheads. Record water hardness and stain frequency on dishes and fixtures over a two-week period.
DIY tests: Use a basic home test kit for pH, total dissolved solids (TDS), and chlorine residual. These kits are affordable and provide quick guidance.
Water hardness check: Compare a few typical uses—coffee, tea, laundry, and shower water. If soap scum appears, or if you see mineral deposits after a few days, hardness is a clear signal.
Professional evaluation: Schedule a water test with a licensed plumber. A comprehensive analysis should cover hardness (GPG or mg/L), iron, manganese, nitrates/nitrites, sulfur, bacteria, and total chlorine.

Tip: Keep a simple log for two weeks and bring the results to your next service call with Legacy Plumbing. Precise data helps us tailor a solution that fits your family’s needs.

The Action Plan: Whole-House Water Softener + Under-Sink RO

Two complementary systems can address everyday comfort, health, and appliance longevity without overwhelming your home’s layout: a whole-house water softener to treat incoming water, and an under-sink reverse osmosis system for high-quality drinking water. Here’s how to approach the retrofit.

1. Whole-House Water Softener: Benefits and Sizing

A whole-house softener reduces calcium and magnesium across all taps, showers, and appliances. Benefits include:

Less mineral buildup in pipes and water heaters
Cleaner dishes and laundry with reduced soap scum
Improved shower experience and skin feel

Sizing considerations: Determine daily water usage (gallons per day) and your home’s hardness level. A licensed plumber can calculate the appropriate grain capacity and resin type. In Colorado Springs, a common residential range is 24,000–48,000 grains, but exact sizing depends on family size, peak usage, and hardness reading.

Tip: Choose a model with a salt or salt-free regeneration option and consider a device with digital metering to optimize regeneration cycles and water waste.

2. Under-Sink Reverse Osmosis: Drinking Water at the Point of Use

An RO system targets micropollutants, improves taste, and reduces dissolved solids in drinking water. This is especially beneficial for families who drink tap water or water used for cooking and baby formula.

Benefits: Great-tasting water, reduced lead and some minerals, improved filtration for sensitive palates.
Common configurations: A multi-stage system with pre-filter, RO membrane, post-filter, and a dedicated faucet.
Maintenance: Regular filter and membrane changes per manufacturer recommendations; proper storage tank sanitization.

Note: An under-sink RO system does not soften water for the entire house; it targets drinking water specifically. It pairs well with a whole-house softener for comprehensive quality improvement.

3. Integration and Workflow

Coordinate installation so that the softener services all cold water lines, and the RO unit sits under the kitchen or bathroom sink with a dedicated faucet. Plan for adequate space, drain lines, and a pressure-balanced feed to ensure optimal performance.

Practical, Family-Friendly Implementation Steps

Follow these actionable steps to retrofit with minimal disruption and maximum benefit.

Choose reputable equipment: Work with Legacy Plumbing to select NSF/ANSI-certified softeners and RO units tailored to your home’s water profile.
Schedule phased installation: Do the softener first to immediately improve daily water quality, then install the RO system after measuring the impact on taste and odor.
Water handling safety: Ensure correct backflow prevention and drainage for both systems to protect your drinking water and plumbing.
Maintenance calendar: Mark filter changes every 6–12 months for the softener and every 6–12 months for RO pre/post-filters, plus periodic membrane checks (as recommended).
Education for the family: Explain why softened water affects skin and appliances, and how to use RO water for drinking and cooking so kids understand the benefits.

Real-Life Scenarios: What to Expect

Here are common outcomes families report after upgrading:

Shower water feels silkier; towels stay softer longer.
Fewer mineral deposits on coffee makers and kettles.
Improved dishwasher and washing machine performance with less soap scum.
Better-tasting drinking water and clearer ice from the fridge dispenser.

If you notice any negative changes after installation, such as unusual TDS readings or reduced water pressure, contact your installer promptly for a quick diagnostic check.
