Introduction: Colorado’s pristine mountains mask a real risk for homeowners: unfiltered water can carry minerals, sediments, and contaminants that affect taste, health, and appliance longevity. At Legacy Plumbing, we’ve seen how practical upgrades—like a whole-house water softener paired with an under-sink reverse osmosis (RO) system—can transform daily life. This post outlines a simple 5-step home audit to spot common contaminants and explains how a combined softening and RO setup safeguards health and protects your fixtures.

Colorado’s unfiltered water: why it matters

Municipal water in Colorado is treated, but private sources and aging infrastructure can introduce minerals like calcium, magnesium, iron, manganese, and trace contaminants. Hard water clogs pipes, reduces appliance efficiency, and leaves spots on dishes. Unfiltered water can also harbor sediment, chlorides, and occasional taste-and-odor issues after long storage or boil notices. A proactive approach helps you improve taste, extend appliance life, and promote a healthier living environment.

5-Step Home Audit to Spot Contaminants

Step 1: Start with a visual and odor check
Look for sediment in taps, cloudy water, or rusty color. Smell the water; a sulfur or odd chemical odor can indicate contamination or water treatment byproducts. Note which fixtures are affected and whether the issue is consistent or intermittent.
Step 2: Test water hardness and mineral content
Hardness often shows up as scale buildup on faucets and showerheads, white residues on glassware, and reduced soap efficiency. Consider a pocket water hardness test or a third-party lab kit to quantify calcium and magnesium levels. If you see scale, you’re likely dealing with hard water—common in Colorado’s mineral-rich aquifers.
Step 3: Inspect for iron and manganese
High iron can cause reddish-brown staining, metallic taste, and clogged fixtures. Manganese may appear as a black/yellowish tint and could leave residue on laundry. If you notice staining or unusual tastes, request a focused iron/manganese test from a local lab or your water supplier.
Step 4: Evaluate taste and odor
Taste and odor can indicate chlorination byproducts, sulfur compounds, or aging pipes. Noticeable tastes (metallic, sulfurous, or chlorine-like) warrant further testing and a filtration assessment.
Step 5: Check your plumbing for corrosion risks
Older galvanized pipes, brass fittings, and water heater anodes can contribute contaminants or metal leaching. If you have galvanized lines or signs of corrosion, it’s time to plan for upgrades that don’t compromise water safety.

Practical improvements: Whole-House Softener + Under-Sink RO

Two complementary systems can dramatically elevate water quality: a whole-house water softener (to address hardness and scale) and a under-sink RO unit (to deliver purified drinking water). Here’s how they work together and why they’re a smart fit for Colorado homes.

What a whole-house water softener does

Reduces hardness by exchanging calcium and magnesium ions for sodium or potassium punch-through ions.
Prevents mineral buildup in pipes, water heaters, and fixtures, boosting efficiency and extending appliance life.
Improves soap performance, skin feel, and laundry brightness with softer water.

What an under-sink RO system provides

Removes dissolved solids, including minerals, metals, salts, and some pesticides, producing highly purified drinking water.
Reduces common contaminants that affect taste and odor, offering a clean, crisp beverage and cooking water.
Complementary to whole-house filtration by targeting the drinking water path without altering whole-house mineral balance.

Why pair them in Colorado

Colorado households often deal with hard water and seasonal taste/odor fluctuations. A whole-house softener minimizes scale and maintenance for plumbing and appliances, while an under-sink RO system ensures your drinking water is free from potentially undesirable substances. Together, they provide comprehensive protection for health and daily comfort.

Implementation: choosing and sizing for your home

Consult a licensed plumber to tailor systems to your household’s water chemistry and consumption. Here are practical guidelines to discuss during a consult with Legacy Plumbing:

Assessing your home’s needs

Water hardness levels (gpg or mg/L) and iron/manganese content.
Water usage patterns: family size, dishwasher and washing machine loads, and drinking water needs.
Flow rate and space constraints for installations (water softener location, RO under-sink footprint).

Sizing tips

A typical whole-house salt-based water softener is sized by equivalent service capacity (e.g., 32,000 or 48,000 grains). For average Colorado families, a 32,000–48,000 grain unit often works well, depending on water hardness and daily usage.
Under-sink RO units commonly provide 3–4 gallons per day of purified water; ensure the unit includes a permeate pump or adequate efficiency for your drinking water demand.

Maintenance expectations

Softener: periodic brine tank refills, resin bed cleaning, and annual resin replacement sometimes needed.
RO system: pre/post-filters typically every 6–12 months, membrane replacement every 2–5 years depending on water quality.

Actionable steps you can take this month

Order a reputable home water test or schedule a professional assessment to quantify hardness, iron, and other contaminants.
Schedule a consultation with Legacy Plumbing to design a whole-house softener and under-sink RO plan tailored to your home.
Start small: install an under-sink RO unit for immediate access to purified drinking water while planning the whole-house system.
Inspect fixtures for signs of corrosion or mineral buildup; replace outdated pipes and brass fittings if necessary.
Develop a maintenance calendar for filtration systems to maintain optimal performance and avoid costly repairs.

Benefits: health, taste, and longevity

Health: purified drinking water reduces exposure to contaminants and improves overall hydration quality.
Taste and odor: softer water and clean H2O removal of unwanted tastes improves daily enjoyment and cooking.
Appliances and plumbing: reduced mineral buildup lowers energy usage, improves efficiency, and extends the life of water heaters, dishwashers, and faucets.

Conclusion: take control of your Colorado water

Unfiltered water in Colorado can bring unwanted minerals, sediment, and contaminants into your home. A strategic combination of a whole-house water softener and an under-sink reverse osmosis system offers tangible benefits for health, taste, and appliance longevity.
